What is an oshi?

In Japanese idol culture, an "oshi" refers to a fan's favorite member of an idol group. The word "oshi" comes from the verb "oshimasu," which means "to push" or "to support."

Fans form strong bonds with their oshis and often dedicate time and resources to support and promote them. This may include attending concerts, buying merchandise, voting in popularity contests, and engaging on social media platforms to promote their chosen oshi.

Idol groups in Japan are typically made up of multiple members, and each fan can have their own oshi. Fans may choose their oshi based on various criteria such as appearance, talent, personality, or even a connection they feel with the member.

Many fans enjoy the thrill of cheering for their oshi at live performances, and some even participate in "wotagei" (ritualistic fan chants and movements) during concerts to show their support. Oshis often have dedicated fan clubs or social media accounts where fans can interact with each other and with the oshi themselves.

Being an oshi is not only about the admiration of an individual member but also involves a sense of community and belonging among fans of the same idol group. Oshis play a crucial role in maintaining the popularity and success of idol groups in the Japanese entertainment industry.
